چکیده

In this report a new Illuminator of Opportunity / Passive Coherent Location research project being conducted in the Microwave Radar Branch of EWRD at DSTO is discussed. Details are provided about such aspects as transmitter selection and characteristics, experimental configurations and power budget studies. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis of two different transmitters’ waveform ambiguity functions is presented. Early results from field experiments demonstrating detections of cars, trucks, trains, helicopters and aircraft using a terrestrial digital TV and geosynchronous satellite signals are also presented. The ability to detect and track targets is then demonstrated through the use of several CFAR and Track Before Detect algorithms. The report concludes by discussing potential application areas for this technology as well as highlighting the likely directions of future research. APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE

Passive Bistatic Radar and Waveform Diversity

This tutorial describes the basis of passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems, and in particular the nature of the waveforms of illuminators of opportunity that they exploit. It shows that there is a wide variety of such waveforms, from broadcast, communications and radionavigation transmissions, and that in general they are not optimum for radar purposes. In addition, they usually vary significant...

Experimental Results Using Satellite Illuminator for Passive Bistatic Radar

Passive, bistatic radar offers an attractive method for remotely detecting and imaging targets without the requirement of a dedicated transmitter. Passive radar systems are usually cheaper than their active counterparts, which easily allows for multi-sensor networks. Furthermore, passive radar systems are difficult to detect and jam. With these advantages come several challenges, however. Bista...

Denial of bistatic hosting by spatial–temporal waveform design

A set of theoretical techniques to prevent a radar from being used by a bistatic radar receiver as a non-cooperative illuminator are analysed. This works by radiating in addition to the radar signal waveform, a ‘masking signal’ waveform which is orthogonal to the radar signal waveform, both in the coding domain and the spatial domain. A number of different coding schemes are analysed. Two spati...

A Range-Doppler-Angle Estimation Method for Passive Bistatic Radar

In this paper, an effective target detection and localization method is proposed for a passive bistatic radar (PBR) system. The PBR system consists of a commercial FM radio station, which is a noncooperative illuminator of opportunity (IO), referred to as the transmitter antenna and multiple surveillance antennas that form an antenna array, e.g., uniform linear array (ULA). Unlike other literat...

Feasibility of Air Target Detection Using GPS as a Bistatic Radar

The feasibility of using GPS as a bistatic radar illuminator for the purposes of air target detection is examined. The power budget analysis is first performed assuming the use of a single satellite, but is followed by a discussion of the expected improvements when multiple satellites are employed. The analysis includes the effect of GPS signal strength dynamic range, also known as the ‘near-fa...
